Hello!
My name is Mike Flowers and I write children’s literature. I became interested in it through a combination of Reading Rainbow, hip-hop, and comic books. I’m the literacy program coordinator for two elementary schools, so I try to make reading as fun as possible (I hope that comes through in my stories). I write picture books and middle grade.
I was selected for 2025’s PB Rising Stars Program by author Laura Gehl and had an amazing mentorship. We worked on several picture books which are listed with descriptions in the manuscripts section of this website. I’ll be returning to PB Rising Stars to support the class of 2026.
I recently sold two poems to Highlights High Five and have had work acquired by Little Thoughts Press, The School Magazine, Spaceports & Spidersilk, and The Dirigible Balloon. I was a 2025 Kid Lit Chuckle Challenge winner and have had success in Susanna Hill’s Annual Holiday Writing Contest, The Valentiny Contest, 50 Precious Words, Spring Fling, and PB Party. I’m a member of SCBWI, 12x12 Challenge, and three awesome critique groups that I’m very thankful for.
I’m originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, but now live with my wife, daughter, and two cats in Marco Island, Florida. I have a Bachelors degree in Communication from Michigan State University and a Masters in Teaching with a concentration in social studies from the University of Southern California. One of my favorite activities is traveling and learning about different cultures. I studied in India, Mexico, and Antarctica before becoming an international teacher in Thailand and Honduras.

What’s your favorite book? The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain.
What’s your favorite video game? The Legend of Zelda.
You enjoy playing basketball, why aren’t you better at it? That’s a hurtful question, but the truth is, I haven’t practiced enough. And besides, it’s just fun to get out there!
Why aren’t you better at pickleball? I haven’t played it…yet.
What time is it right now? It’s 2:15 pm, but that’s likely to change soon.
Would you rather have a pet Tyrannosaurus rex, or a pet Sabre-toothed Tiger? That’s easy, a pet goldfish.
What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? Raspberry sherbet.
Why did you answer “raspberry sherbet” for the previous question when you know full well that sherbet and ice cream are not the same thing?
I sometimes like to put silly answers in OAQs.
Would you rather have a spaceship or a time machine? Time machine because I could travel to the past, be the first to discover gold, then take all that gold to the future where I could buy a spaceship and have both.
Will you be super disappointed if you get to that spaceship dealership in the future and they don’t let you buy a spaceship because you don’t have a valid spaceship license? Yes.
